Colonoscopy F&Q

A colonoscopy is a diagnostic procedure that allows a doctor to examine the inner lining of your large intestine (colon) and rectum using a long, flexible tube called a colonoscope, which has a small video camera attached to the end.

It is performed for various reasons, including screening for colon cancer, investigating intestinal signs and symptoms (like abdominal pain, rectal bleeding, and chronic diarrhea), and looking for more information about other conditions, such as polyps or inflammatory bowel disease.

Preparation involves following a special diet the day before the exam, taking a laxative in either pill or liquid form as prescribed, and arranging for someone to drive you home afterward due to the sedatives or anesthesia used during the procedure.

During the procedure, you'll lie on your side on the exam table. The doctor will insert the colonoscope into your rectum, inflating your colon with air to improve visibility. The camera sends images to an external monitor, allowing the doctor to examine the inside of your colon and rectum. If necessary, polyps or other types of abnormal tissue can be removed through the scope during the procedure.

Though generally safe, risks include reactions to the sedative used, bleeding from the site where a biopsy was taken or a polyp was removed, and perforation of the colon wall, which might require surgical repair.

Post-procedure, you may feel bloated or have gas cramps and will need to pass the air introduced into your colon during the procedure. Any sedative's effects usually wear off in an hour or so. Although you might notice a small amount of blood with your first bowel movement after the exam, significant bleeding or persistent abdominal pain should be reported to your doctor immediately.
